SJSU gives CSUMB their tired poor huddled and rejected masses."

Due to budget cuts, San Jose State has had to turn away about 4400 "qualified" students. Only those who reside within Santa Clara County were given priority. If one resides on the outskirts of S.C. County, and is rejected from SJSU, they will be encouraged to apply to CSU East Bay and CSU Monterey Bay. In other words, if Jose say No Way, then andele to the Bay.

Here is a quote from a High School counselor in the San Jose Mercury News, "Some students didn't get in that applied. But most of them made other plans, to Cal State University-Monterey Bay.............," said Julie Edwards Levy, manager of career services at Scotts Valley High School. "They're working with what they have to work with. They're not happy but they're figuring it out."

So let me get this straight, there will be a lot of newcomers next year, who really do NOT want to be at CSUMB in the first place. That will great for student morale.

One of two things will happen, the place will grow on them. Or, they will bide their time and look to go to a first choice location down the road.
The upside might be an increase in students, but the downside could be an even higher attrition rate if there are more students who are not happy to be here. Any institution can get students to show up, but can they keep them? Time shall tell.

Feeling the Blues over losing the Green.

On St. Patrick's Day, today is the day to wear green. But on a daily basis, CSUMB will always be green to me. Even though today their colors resemble that of the St. Louis Rams.

Out of curiosity I asked a long time university employee about this color change and he said one summer the administration decided to change the colors. Apparently this happened without any student or alumni input.
(So what else is new?)

As one who is one of original pioneer students, it is permanently embedded in my mind that CSUMB's colors are green and gold. I have watched every single season of basketball since its inception in 1996. There were years when the only time I could see them was on the road because I lived nowhere near CSUMB. But I made a point of seeing at least one game every season.

As one can see, it is very much inbeeded in my mind to pull for the team in green and opposing other teams that sometimes wear blue. Today the sports world at CSUMB is flipped upside down. Whenever a visiting team that wears green like Cal Poly Pomona or Humboldt State comes to town, I find I have to remind myself they are NOT my team.
This color disconnect has felt strange. To imagine what goes through my mind, just imagine if one day the San Francisco Giants colors were blue, and the L.A. Dodgers colors were orange and black. Giving up pulling for a team in green and suddenly pulling for another set of colors is like switchng from left handed to right handed.
